It Wasn't Breakfast At Tiffany's

WARNING:   If you are someone with delicate sensibilities, are easily offended, are fond of tossing stones in glass houses, or otherwise have a holier-than-thou attitude, STOP reading right now!    May I suggest, in the alternative, a nice Disney movie, a classic novel, or a few old sitcoms on TVLand instead?    Now, for those still here, I trust you will have compassion for two people who are in a difficult situation.    Some of you may remember Andrea* and David* from "The Boss's Wife," and the follow-up, "Are There Ever Happy Endings?"    I've recently been privy to an update from both Andrea and David.    Since the last column, they finally have had the opportunity to spend some quality time alone together again on two separate occasions, and found that those ten years apart had not extinguished the passions at all.    In fact, if nothing else, it had made the flames burn that much more intensely.

I will respect the privacy shared between the beauty of two soul mates that are struggling with situations currently more complex than my mere words can describe, or any flippant advice can solve, at this particular point in time.    Suffice it to say that, although it seems that these two lovers appear to be caught in a continuing star-crossed path, time will reveal that their love was always meant to be.

But, what I am about to recount is an abbreviated amalgamation of the same two stories (told from different viewpoints) that I was recently entertained by -- and, entertained I was -- in that uncomfortable, movie plot, "can't-turn-away-from-the-car-crash" effect that feels like an extremely long, seemingly unbearable, Seinfeld episode.

In some weird turn of events, David's significant other, Lucy has befriended Andrea (don't ask -- it seems no one knows the answer to this one!).    And, when David and Lucy* traveled nearby where Andrea and her husband Carl* now live, Lucy decided they should all get together for dinner one evening.    Uncomfortable yet?    I was, just hearing the beginning of this tale . . . it is simply amazing what two people will do to spend time with one another -- even if it means dinner with their respective partners in tow.

Amazingly enough, from all accounts, the evening wasn't all that bad.    Lively conversation all around, good food, congenial interaction between the two women, and the two men -- no outward signs that this was anything other than two couples -- four friends -- out for dinner.    (I don't think I could have pulled it off myself!)    I guess some people will do some amazing things for love.

My dear friends, Andrea and David . . . I wish you joy, happiness and, when the time is right, courage and strength to do whatever it takes to be together for the rest of your lives.    (Remember that you're both always wishing upon the same star when you look up into the night sky and, one day, those wishes will all come true!)
