Are There Ever Happy Endings?
Saturday, March 20, 2004

Oh, thinking about all our younger years
There was only you and me,
We were young and wild and free
Now, nothing can take you away from me
We've been down that road before
But that's over now, you keep me comin' back for more *

[*Heaven, Bryan Adams]

So much as happened since the column The Boss's Wife was originally published (February 28, 2003/BW). Andrea** and David** -- after ten years of complete and total separation -- even though they had both tried throughout the years to find each other again -- have finally reconnected; at least via telephone and the internet. And, so much has happened in those ten years that they have been apart; but their feelings haven't changed for one another, unless you choose to say that their feelings have somehow grown stronger over the years.

Oh, once in your life you find someone
Who will turn your world around
Bring you up when you're feeling down
Yeah, nothing could change what you mean to me
Oh there's lots that I could say
But just hold me now, 'cause our love will light the way *

[*Heaven, Bryan Adams]

Andrea and David are currently living approximately 500 miles apart. Andrea is still married. David is twice divorced and presently remarried again. The lifestyles and socio-economic differences are even more blatantly obvious now, and then there is that nasty little age difference that is compounded by the addition of ten extra years of lost time.

One of a kind love affair is
The kind of love that you read about in a fairy tale
Like the sun that shines on a rainy day
It's a cloud of love
One of a kind love affair is
When your down is up and your up is down but love stays around
And when you know you're right but you got to make
A little sacrifice
You make it for love whoa-oh yeah ***

[***One Of A Kind (Love Affair), Spinners]

But, are ANY of these "roadblocks" making a bit of difference to Andrea and David? No! They're making plans to visit one another at least one time each during the summer and, beyond that, to take things "one-day-at-a-time." And who are we to criticize -- to "cast-stones," as it were? They make each other happy. They bring a real happiness into each other's life that is otherwise missing. To hear each of them bubbling over with giddy emotions just talking about the other one is contagious! Are we so holy and self-righteous that we can "pass-judgment" on two people who deserve a little happiness? I, for one, am not going to "cast-the-first-stone," as I know my own life is not without guilt of its own. In fact, if truth be known, I'm more than a little jealous of a love so strong, so deep, and so long-lasting . . .

It stills feels like our first night together
Feels like the first kiss
And it's getting better, baby
No one can better this
Still holding on
Your still the one

First time our eyes met
Same feeling I get
Only feels much stronger
Only love you longer
You still turn the fire on

So, if you're feeling lonely ... don't
You're the only one I ever want
I only wanna make it good
So, if I love you a little more than I should
Please forgive me; I know not what I do
Please forgive me; I can't stop loving you
Don't deny me, this pain I'm going through
Please forgive me; I need you like I do
Oh believe me, every word I say is true
Please forgive me; I can't stop loving you

Still feels like our best times are together
Feels like the first touch
Still getting closer baby
Can't get close enough
Still holding on
You're still number one

I remember the smell of your skin
I remember everything
I remember all of your moves
I remember you, yeah
I remember the nights; you know I still do

The one thing I'm sure of
Is the way we make love
The one thing I depend on
Is for us to stay strong
With every word and every breath I'm praying
That's why I'm saying

Please forgive me; I know not what I do
Please forgive me; I can't stop loving you
Don't deny me, this pain I'm going through
Please forgive me, if I need you like I do
Babe, believe me, every word I say is true
Please forgive me, if I can't stop loving you
No, believe me, I don't know what I do
Please forgive me; I can't stop loving you
Can't stop loving you.... ****

The Boss's Wife
Thursday, March 18, 2004

Andrea* didn't know what to expect.     David* was only stopping by on his way to work to pick up a tape she had made for him.     Through conversations when she had on occasion stopped by her husband's company, she found that she and David (an employee of her husband's) enjoyed the same types of music -- music that her husband detested.     And, there was a group that she thought David might like to hear, so she offered to record a tape for him.

Although Andrea was nine years older, and the boss's wife, she couldn't deny the strong attraction she felt for David, but she had no idea if he had any interest in her whatsoever.     He was married as well, with a small son, and seemed a happy-go-lucky twenty-four year old with his whole life ahead of him.     To any outside observer, they seemed to be total opposites.     And, she felt like such a fool for even entertaining these sorts of thoughts.

That morning, Andrea was acting like a silly schoolgirl.     Giddy with anticipation, she spent hours debating over what to wear, how to do her hair, how much make-up was too much, even how she should act, and feeling foolish for even considering the dangerous thoughts that were racing through her mind.

When David arrived, he had brought a CD for her to borrow so she could make a tape for herself of one of his favorite bands, and they went into the den to listen to the CD and talk for a while.     She sensed that her pale complexion was giving her away as she felt the blood rising in her face, and felt her extremities turning ice cold, as her body began burning hot, all at the same time.     But, it seemed, he hadn't even noticed, as he chattered on about this and that.

That's when she realized she had been acting so foolish.     What would this younger guy see in her anyway?     They were friends, nothing more; friends who liked the same kind of music, and who happen to have met because he worked for her husband.     How stupid she felt for even considering the possibilities.

And, when she had finally composed herself, brought herself back into the real world, and brushed all the foolish thoughts from her mind, that's when their eyes met and, immediately, she just knew.

A moment later, his lips were on hers and she was swept away in the passion that had been building all morning.     Knowing this was wrong; she couldn't stop, wouldn't stop, and definitely didn't want to stop.     Right there, in the floor of the house that she and her husband owned, with one of her husband's employees, she had some of the wildest, most passionate, sex she had experienced in years.     And, then, it was time for him to leave for work.     How was that for irony?

Did Andrea come to her senses after that one afternoon's rencontre sexuelle?     Are you kidding?     David was amazing!     She wasn't about to give up something like that so easily.     And, so began an affair that lasted for over a year, until her husband was transferred to another city.

Did Andrea take a new lover in the new city?     No!     She would never again take another lover to her bed.     Her body may once again belong to her husband, but her heart will always belong to David.
